The story behind the artwork

He was there.

In Jules Breton’s The Song of the Lark, a young laborer pauses in a field as the sun meets the horizon. There is beauty in that pause, and a sense of all she has carried through the day.

For All Ye That Labor, I imagined Christ sharing that moment with her. Asking the question: What if, in the midst of our heaviest days, we could see the One who has been beside us all along?

A work in six moments

From a beloved painting to a visible presence.

Follow the visual sequence that led to the finished piece.

  1. Jules Breton’s original young laborer standing alone in a field at sunset
    01 / 06

    The starting point

I added something to this beautiful 140 year old painting...

The figure, the field, and the sunset first invited me to look again.

  2. A wider view of the laborer alone beneath the evening sky
    02 / 06

    The space beside her

Someone I believe is already with us in moments like this.

I expanded the original scene, adding space beside her to make room for Christ.

  3. Christ appears beside the laborer with an open hand
    03 / 06

    The first invitation

Not to improve the painting. To visualize something I believe deeply.

The new figure gives form to a conviction, while honoring the painting that began it.

  4. Detail of Christ standing in the field and extending his hand
    04 / 06

    The open hand

Christ is with us in our weariness.

His gesture holds the invitation without taking away the reality of her work.

  5. The laborer looks toward Christ in the wide sunset scene
    05 / 06

    The look between them

Christ is with us in our longing.

The moment between two figures becomes a picture of being seen.

  6. Finished artwork, All Ye That Labor, with Christ and the laborer together at sunset
    06 / 06

    The finished piece

To be yoked with Christ is not to walk without burdens. It is to never carry them alone.
